distress

Bitemarks on the bridge of my nose
just to feel something else
I suppose
I’m not doing well
if I’m having those
thoughts.
i don’t think i can listen
to another snarky remark
i say to myself
before i chuckle
and insist i’m only joking
but it’s probably truer
to just admit
that i have a bit of
the joker’s laugh
just not enough
for a diagnosis.
but it’s not my fault
that there’s a neural overlap
between what’s physical and
emotional.
it’s just that what’s physical is
so much easier to manage.
because if your body is damaged
it’s best to stay home
but if your emotions are damaged
don’t you dare pick up the phone
to call out from work
though i’d probably
be more productive
with a broken foot
than a distressed mind.
unfortunately,
no matter the injury or illness
the system isn’t
made to be kind.
