safe space

it’s disturbingly euphoric to understand
that I’ve been searching for
some of your worst traits
in other people because those are
the fragments of you
that my skin hasn’t released
and as more time passes
the more I realize it wasn’t even you
that I fell in love with.
I was unaffected by your appalling tendencies,
not because I actually thought
you were a “good” person underneath.
I didn’t care either way.
you were just you in a manner
that granted me the serenity
to just be me
and I was willing to protect that feeling
by any means necessary.
